CBP officials state no new procedures are implemented for arriving foreigners

(MENAFN) Officials from US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at Washington Dulles International Airport have clarified that no new measures have been implemented for foreign nationals arriving in the United States since President Donald Trump began his second term in office this January.

While CBP agents are legally permitted to deny entry to non-citizens—even if they possess valid visas—such refusals can occur for a range of reasons. These include possession of banned plant materials, having images on their phones considered inappropriate, or certain activity on social media platforms.

Concerns have been increasing due to a rise in reported cases of travelers being turned away at US airports, allegedly because of their support for Gaza. These incidents have sparked fear among some international visitors.

Speaking during a press event coordinated by the US State Department’s Foreign Press Center, CBP supervisor Matthew Armour explained the standard procedures passengers go through upon arrival.

Responding to questions about whether border screening has become more stringent under Trump’s renewed leadership, Armour stated: “Nothing has changed. We are continuing to operate according to the same laws and regulations.”

He noted that examining social media accounts or conducting phone checks may be included in what is known as "secondary screening."

One recent case involved Rasha Alawieh, an assistant professor at Brown University, who arrived at Boston Logan International Airport on March 13. According to court records and information from various sources, images discovered on her phone included photos of the late Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah—killed in an Israeli airstrike—as well as pictures from a memorial event in Beirut held in his honor.

Following an interview with CBP agents, Alawieh was denied entry and subsequently returned to Lebanon on the next available flight.
