Syria Busts Hezbollah-Linked Rocket Cell in Daraa, Arrests 3
According to the ministry's statement, the General Intelligence Directorate, working with internal security forces, arrested the suspects in the Yarmouk Basin in western Daraa. The operation came after authorities monitored what they described as an attempt by the cell to set up rocket launchers for attacks aimed at destabilizing security.
The ministry said the launchers were fully dismantled and that investigations into the suspects were continuing ahead of their referral to judicial authorities. It did not name the intended targets or say how many launchers were found.
Hezbollah had not immediately commented on the claims as of 2000GMT.
The Yarmouk Basin sits in western Daraa province, close to the disengagement line with Israel.
The arrests follow an earlier announcement on July 16, when Syrian authorities said they had foiled an attempt to smuggle a shipment of advanced weapons across the Syrian-Iraqi border. Preliminary investigations indicated the cargo was meant to pass through Syrian territory to Lebanon for Hezbollah, authorities said.
